Overview
(NASDAQ: MDB · $381.29 ▼ 1.2%) MongoDB is a New York-headquartered software company that develops a database platform built around the document data model. Its stated mission is to empower innovators to create, transform and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data, and it describes its platform as built by developers, for developers. Document databases store records as flexible, JSON-like structures rather than fixed relational tables, which lets application teams change data shapes without extensive schema migrations.
The company's platform pairs a database with an integrated set of related services in a unified user experience, and its MongoDB Atlas offering is a multi-cloud data platform that can be deployed across any cloud or a customer's own infrastructure. Atlas covers operational and transactional workloads, including multi-document ACID transactions, alongside vector search, text search, stream processing that can ingest data from sources such as Apache Kafka, analytics, graph and geospatial queries. Bundling these capabilities into one platform is intended to reduce the number of separate systems, such as standalone search engines or vector stores, that development teams must run and keep in sync, a point of growing relevance for applications built on generative AI. The company also offers Voyage AI embedding models and rerankers, and integrates with more than 100 technologies.
MongoDB was founded in 2007, originally under the name 10gen, by former DoubleClick veterans who had run into the scaling limits of relational databases while serving more than 400,000 ads per second. The platform has been downloaded hundreds of millions of times since then, and millions of builders have trained through MongoDB University courses. The company serves more than 67,000 customers in over 100 countries across sectors including retail, automotive, telecommunications, healthcare and financial services, and has more than 1,000 technology and service partners and over 5,000 employees worldwide.
