Overview
Databricks is a data and AI company headquartered in San Francisco that offers a unified Data Intelligence Platform for building and scaling data and AI apps, analytics and agents. The platform runs both analytical and operational workloads on one open, governed foundation and is built on top of Apache Spark, bringing data engineering, data science and machine learning into a single workspace. This approach reflects the lakehouse model, which combines the low-cost storage of a data lake with the transactions and SQL performance of a data warehouse, using open formats such as Delta Lake and Apache Iceberg.
The platform includes Agent Bricks, Lakeflow, Lakehouse, Lakebase and Unity Catalog. Lakeflow handles batch and streaming ETL pipelines, Lakebase is a serverless Postgres database integrated with the lakehouse, Agent Bricks supports building and evaluating AI agents with any model or framework, and Unity Catalog provides governance with permissions, lineage and auditing. Additional offerings include Genie, a natural language analytics interface for business users, Unity Gateway for governing AI access and spend, and Databricks Apps for deploying data and AI applications on serverless compute. Taken together, the products aim to replace a stack of separate ingestion, transformation, analytics and machine learning tools with one copy of data and one governance model, a consolidation that appeals to enterprises managing costs and compliance across many systems.
More than 20,000 organizations worldwide use Databricks, including adidas, AT&T, Bayer, Block, Mastercard, Rivian and Unilever, as well as over 60% of the Fortune 500. The company operates more than 30 offices around the globe, and its platform runs on any cloud, which matters to large buyers whose data is spread across multiple cloud providers. Typical users range from data engineers and data scientists to business users who query data in plain language.
