Overview
JetBrains is a software company that builds development tools, and its stated mission is to make software development more productive and enjoyable. Much of its range consists of integrated development environments (IDEs), which bring code editing, navigation, debugging and testing together in one application. The line-up includes IntelliJ IDEA for Java and Kotlin, PyCharm for Python, WebStorm for JavaScript, Rider for .NET and game development, CLion for C and C++, and DataGrip for working with multiple databases; several of these are free for non-commercial use. The company also offers Air, which it describes as an agentic development environment for teams, along with a set of tools, libraries and integrations built around the Kotlin programming language.
Beyond individual coding tools, JetBrains sells products aimed at teams: TeamCity for continuous integration, YouTrack for project management, Qodana for code quality through static analysis, and Datalore, a self-hosted data science platform. The company says its products are technology-agnostic and support languages including Java, Kotlin, C#, Python, Go, PHP, TypeScript and Scala. Taken together, these products cover much of the software lifecycle, from writing code to building, reviewing and tracking it, which allows organisations to standardise on one vendor across several stages of development.
JetBrains reports that more than 15 million developers and more than 300,000 organisations use its tools, including 88 of the Fortune Global Top 100 companies. For business customers it highlights AI-powered IDEs, flexible licensing, enterprise-grade support and SOC 2 attestation, considerations that commonly matter when large organisations buy developer tooling at scale. Its short tagline, "Make it happen. With Code.", keeps the emphasis on the people who write software, while these business features speak to the security and cost concerns of the organisations that pay for it.
