Overview
GitHub is a software development platform where individuals and teams host code, collaborate on it, and build, scale and deliver secure software, with AI tools built into the workflow. Platforms of this kind are built around version control, typically Git, so that many contributors can work on the same codebase and review changes before they are merged. More than 225 million developers and over 4 million organizations use GitHub, which hosts more than 800 million repositories.
The company's AI assistant, GitHub Copilot, helps developers write, test, fix and review code, takes on assigned tasks, and in agent mode can analyze a codebase and edit multiple files. The wider platform includes GitHub Actions for CI/CD; Codespaces for cloud-based development environments; Issues, Projects and Discussions for planning and conversation; a Marketplace for apps, actions and AI models; a mobile app; and Sponsors for supporting open source tools and libraries. Security products include GitHub Advanced Security, Code Security with Copilot Autofix, Dependabot for updating vulnerable dependencies, and Secret Protection for detecting and remediating leaked credentials. Modern applications draw heavily on third-party open source packages, and credentials can slip into source code, so automated dependency updates and secret scanning have become common security practices.
Users range from people learning to code to large enterprises, including developers at 90 of the Fortune 100 companies. Customers include Figma, Mercedes-Benz, Mercado Libre and Duolingo, spanning sectors such as technology, automotive and financial services. For large organizations, consolidating code hosting, automation, security and planning on a single platform can simplify and standardize development tooling. Beyond its products, GitHub publishes the annual State of the Octoverse report on trends across the platform's code and communities, and works to shape policy in support of developer rights.
