Overview

(NYSE: TWLO · $282.66 ▼ 2.4%) Twilio is a cloud communications company whose Customer Engagement Platform (CEP) lets businesses build direct, personalized relationships with their customers. The company was founded in 2008 to simplify the complexity of the global telecommunications network and bring communications to the cloud. It has since grown into a platform that combines communication channels, contextual data and AI orchestration, with the aim of adding intelligence and security to every step of the customer journey, from sales and marketing to growth and customer service. This places Twilio in the communications platform as a service (CPaaS) category, where companies use programmable APIs instead of building their own telecom infrastructure.

Twilio's product lines cover messaging over SMS, RCS, WhatsApp and MMS, email delivery through the Twilio SendGrid Email API, voice, user verification and identity lookup tools for fighting fraud, and the unification of customer data from any source. Its conversation products, including Conversation Orchestrator, Conversation Relay, Conversation Intelligence and Conversation Memory, are designed to let humans and AI agents share context and hand off conversations, while customers move between chat, text, voice and email without interruption. Taken together, these tools reflect a broader shift in the category from single-channel delivery toward connected, data-informed customer conversations, accessed in a flexible, programmatic way.

Millions of developers use Twilio, and the company has more than 400,000 active customer accounts in over 180 countries and territories, ranging from scaling startups to global enterprises. Developers can start with a free account and official server-side SDKs in languages such as Python, Java, Node.js, Ruby, PHP and C#, a self-serve model typical of developer-focused infrastructure vendors. The company also runs a social impact arm, Twilio.org, which provides technology, funding and time to help organizations expand their impact using communications technologies.
