Overview
(NYSE: U · $46.68 ▼ 0.4%) Unity is a publicly traded software company, listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker U, that offers a suite of tools to create, market, and grow games and interactive experiences. Its core product is the Unity Engine, a real-time development platform where creators script in C# and build 2D and 3D games in any genre. A game engine handles rendering, physics, input and platform builds, so studios using one avoid building that foundation themselves and can put their effort into content and design.
Unity's work spans mobile, PC, console and extended reality, and projects can be built for more than 25 platforms, including iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Meta Quest, the web and Apple Vision Pro. Beyond development, the company offers advertising tools for user acquisition, monetization products such as Unity Ads and an in-app purchase plug-in, along with built-in player insights. Together these products cover the full game lifecycle, from building a title to finding players and earning revenue, which is the logic behind the create, market and grow framing.
Licensing is tiered by customer size: a free Personal plan for hobbyists and small teams, Pro for businesses above $200K in revenue or funding, Enterprise for those above $25 million, and Industry for non-game applications at companies whose total finances exceed $1,000,000. The Industry plan serves the engine's use beyond games, in 3D applications for automotive, manufacturing, retail and medical science. The free Personal tier, paired with learning resources such as Unity Learn, documentation and community forums, helps explain why the engine is commonly a first tool for students and indie creators who may later move to paid plans as they grow. Small independent studios also use it, among them Team Cherry, maker of Hollow Knight: Silksong.
