Overview
Established in 1850, Chamber of Commerce Hawaii is a statewide, non-profit advocacy organization that offers an impactful array of programs: hiring, working force development, young professionals, military affairs, networking, business development and more. The organization traces its origins to Honolulu, where 10 businessmen signed a constitution for a chamber of commerce after the California Gold Rush increased trade between Honolulu and San Francisco. It describes itself as the second oldest chamber west of the Rockies.
The Chamber works on behalf of its approximately 2,000 member organizations and the business community, to improve Hawaii’s economic climate and help our business community thrive locally, nationally and globally. Its membership includes small companies and nonprofits on every island, representing more than 200,000 employees. Its programs include an ambassador committee, policy and public affairs work, the Impact Smallbiz Accelerator, sector partnerships, a Public Health Fund that awards grants for public health education, research and legislation, and disaster relief and resilience resources for businesses.
The Chamber helped create several Hawaii organizations, including Aloha United Way, Blood Bank of Hawaii, the Better Business Bureau of Hawaii, the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau and Crime Stoppers Honolulu. It also runs a business directory, produces a podcast about business in Hawaii and hosts ribbon-cutting ceremonies for grand openings, re-openings and new locations.
