Overview
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs is a semi-autonomous state agency in Hawaiʻi that serves all Native Hawaiians, regardless of blood quantum. OHA is dedicated to providing a better life and future for all Hawaiians. Learn more at www.oha.org.
The agency was proposed at the Hawaiian Constitutional Convention of 1978 and approved by voters, with the aim of using income from land taken in the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom to benefit Hawaiians. A Board of Trustees of nine members, elected statewide to four-year terms, sets policy and appoints a Chief Executive Officer who oversees a staff of about 170 people.
The agency's work includes advocacy, research, community engagement, land management, loans and grants, with more than $12 million awarded annually to programs statewide. Its priorities cover economic stability, educational pathways, quality housing and health outcomes. Headquartered in Iwilei, Oʻahu, the agency also runs community resource centers on Kauaʻi, Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi and in Hilo and Kona.
