Overview

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser is a daily newspaper headquartered in Honolulu that describes itself as the largest daily newspaper in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi and the state's largest news-gathering organization. It was formed from the merger of The Honolulu Advertiser and The Honolulu Star-Bulletin, then 154 and 128 years old respectively, and published its first edition on June 7, 2010. Combining two long-running dailies into one title reflects a pattern seen across many U.S. cities, where shrinking print advertising made it hard to sustain competing daily papers.

The paper's coverage centers on Hawaii news, with sections for the neighbor islands, prep and university sports, crime, traffic, health, business, weather and obituaries, alongside national and world news. Regular features include the Kokua Line reader-question column, the Crave food section, a Focus on Japan section, letters to the editor, photo galleries and daily puzzles such as crosswords and sudoku. Readers can access the content through a digital subscription that includes an online version of the printed paper, a model many regional dailies have adopted to make up for falling print revenue.

The Star-Advertiser is the flagship product of Oahu Publications, Inc., which also owns MidWeek, three military papers, various specialty publications, and luxury and hotel magazines, and is itself a subsidiary of Carpenter Media Group. Its newsroom and administrative offices are in Building 2 of Waterfront Plaza at 500 Ala Moana Blvd., while its Roland offset printing press is housed in a 147,000-square-foot production and distribution facility in Kapolei. For a daily newspaper in an island state, printing locally avoids the delays and costs of shipping finished papers from the mainland.
