Overview
Mercury is a fintech company that provides banking and financial workflow tools to startups, small businesses and scaling companies. The company places an account at the center of a business's operations to help companies align spending with their priorities, and it reports more than 300K startup customers. Mercury is not itself an FDIC-insured bank; its banking services are provided through Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., both Members FDIC. This partner-bank model is common in financial technology, where firms build the software and customer experience while chartered banks hold deposits.
Its products include checking and savings accounts with no minimums, cashback business credit cards, virtual cards, bill pay, invoicing, and fee-free USD payments by wire, ACH, check and real-time transfer. Treasury by Mercury Advisory offers portfolios powered by Morgan Stanley Investment Management and State Street Investment Management, while Mercury Books provides AI-powered accounting and the platform syncs with QuickBooks, Xero and NetSuite. Eligible deposits can receive up to $5M in FDIC insurance through partner banks and their sweep networks, and team controls include card limits, approval flows and granular permissions. Mercury also offers personal accounts, including savings and joint accounts. Taken together, these products move the company beyond a deposit account toward a combined banking, spend management and bookkeeping platform, useful to founders who would otherwise assemble separate tools.
Mercury was founded to make banking better for entrepreneurs starting and scaling businesses, and spent its first five years on the core banking experience before expanding into broader financial operations. The company reports more than 1,000 employees, who are encouraged to question processes, voice their opinions and pursue excellence. Since its early days, teams have served each other tea, a small ritual reflecting the company's stated emphasis on slowing down and gratitude.
