Overview
(NASDAQ: EXPE · $268.47 ▼ 2.1%) Expedia Group is a publicly traded online travel company, listed on NASDAQ as EXPE, that runs a family of consumer travel brands and supplies travel technology to industry partners. The company frames travel as a force for good that opens minds, builds connections and bridges divides, and describes its work as building technology for travelers everywhere. Its brands, including Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo, cover hotels, vacation rentals, packages, flights and more, which lets travelers plan and book an entire trip in one place. Travelers can use a 24/7 virtual agent to cancel, change or ask about a refund for a trip.
Alongside its consumer brands, Expedia Group offers B2B technology and advertising solutions to partners, positioning itself as a bridge between travelers and travel providers. This two-sided model is typical of large online travel agencies, which earn from both bookings and services sold to hotels, airlines and other suppliers seeking to reach travelers. The company's inventory spans more than 70 countries and destinations, over 3.5 million stay options and more than 200,000 activities and experiences.
Expedia.com launched in 1996 as a division of Microsoft; the business went public in 1999 and was spun off in 2005 as Expedia, Inc., an independent travel company. Over time it added brands such as Hotwire, Orbitz, Travelocity, Wotif and HomeAway, took the Expedia Group name in 2018 and later consolidated its separate systems onto a single technology platform. Building a portfolio through acquisitions is common among large online travel companies, which often keep familiar brand names while consolidating the technology behind them. The company has set a goal of a 90% absolute reduction in emissions by 2040. Expedia Group advises job seekers that genuine offers come only from its talent acquisition and hiring teams, and candidates with disabilities can request accommodations.
