The company grew out of a failed Denali expedition in which a pair of gaiters broke down, and it was founded around the X-Gaiter, an insulated gaiter designed to fit a variety of boots. Its founding philosophy applied a research-led method to problems faced outdoors, and several products from the 1980s and early 1990s remain in production.

Outdoor Research operates a headquarters in Seattle, a distribution center just south of the city and a factory in El Monte, California. Its product range includes down and insulated jackets and hoodies, fleece, 3L rain jackets, pants and sun-protective UPF apparel. The company also supports community partner organizations working on accessible outdoor spaces through funding, events and volunteering, and produces films about athletes and partners.
