PostHog is a software company that builds an integrated, open source platform of product and data tools for product engineers, with the stated aim of increasing the number of successful products in the world. Its starting premise is that product tooling has been fragmented, with teams buying, integrating and sending data to separate vendors for analytics, heatmaps, session recording, web analytics, feature flags and A/B testing. Consolidating these functions in one system is meant to reduce integration work and keep user behaviour, errors and business data in a shared context, which is a common motivation for engineering-led teams choosing all-in-one platforms.

The product suite also covers error tracking, experiments, surveys, a managed data warehouse, a customer data platform, workflows, logs, AI observability and tracing, and can pull in data from more than 800 third-party sources. PostHog describes itself as a context layer for products, letting people and AI agents query this data, including from a code editor through its MCP integration. The platform can be hosted in the US or EU, and both versions are SOC2 certified, GDPR-ready and HIPAA compliant, which matters to buyers in regulated sectors such as healthcare.

The company started in Y Combinator's W20 cohort and launched on Hacker News in 2020 with a product only four weeks old. It reports use by more than 500,000 teams and says it grows largely through word of mouth rather than through salespeople. Its stated approach includes free tiers, usage-based pricing matched to the cheapest major competitor, a public roadmap, published salaries and an open source codebase, and it says it runs the company "default alive", without selling products at a loss. This combination of transparency and self-serve adoption is unusual in business software, where sales-led contracts and annual price increases are more typical.
