Overview
(NYSE: GM · $82.37 ▼ 0.4%) General Motors (GM) is an automotive manufacturer that designs and builds vehicles under four brands: Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. The company states its vision as a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion, and frames its work as part of a broader shift in transportation. Those three goals map onto pressures facing the wider car industry: vehicle safety, emissions regulation and urban traffic.
GM's portfolio spans retail vehicles for everyday use, commercial vehicles for businesses and performance vehicles for racing, offered with electric drivetrains, internal combustion engines and advanced driver assistance systems. Models include the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Buick Enclave, GMC Canyon and the electric Cadillac Escalade IQ. The brands are positioned differently, with Chevrolet built around strength and dependability, Buick around design-led everyday luxury, GMC around rugged, professional-grade capability and Cadillac around style and sophisticated features. A multi-brand structure of this kind lets a single manufacturer reach buyers across a wide range of budgets and needs. The company also offers a GM Rewards Mastercard issued by Barclays and runs a company store selling branded apparel and collectibles.
GM was founded on September 16, 1908, in Flint, Michigan, and is now headquartered in Detroit, Michigan. It operates more than 150 U.S. facilities, including assembly plants, tech centers, distribution hubs and offices, and has more than 20 teams across areas such as design, engineering, software, manufacturing and skilled trades. For a manufacturer more than a century old, that mix of software and technology roles alongside production work reflects the industry's shift toward connected and electric vehicles. The company describes itself as open and inclusive, with a culture based on respect, integrity, accountability and equality, and says it draws on wide-ranging perspectives to address transportation challenges.
