Overview
SMUD, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, began serving Sacramento in 1946. As the nation’s sixth-largest, community-owned, not-for-profit electric service provider, SMUD has been providing low-cost, reliable electricity to Sacramento County for more than 75 years. SMUD is a recognized industry leader and award winner for its innovative energy efficiency programs, renewable power technologies and for its sustainable solutions for a healthier environment. Today, SMUD’s power supply is on average about 50 percent carbon free and SMUD has a goal to reach zero carbon in its electricity production by 2030.
The utility serves over 1.5 million people across a territory of 900 square miles and has a Board of Directors whose past meeting discussions and upcoming agendas are available. Customers can use online account tools, a mobile app and an outage center to pay bills, review usage and start, stop or transfer service. SMUD also offers rebates and incentives, information on solar and incentives for battery storage, electric vehicle resources and an energy advisor hub for businesses organized by industry and technology. The company carries out research and testing of sustainable energy solutions and supports the community through volunteering, donations and education.
