Overview
Danone is a food and beverage group organised around three health-focused categories: Essential Dairy & Plant-Based, Waters, and Specialized Nutrition. Its stated mission is bringing health through food to as many people as possible, and the company says it aims for measurable impact across nutritional, social, societal and environmental dimensions. The company reports that 89% of the products it sells belong to healthy categories, and says that in 2020 it became the first listed company to adopt the 'Société à Mission' status. Created under French law, this status requires a company to set out a purpose with social and environmental objectives in its articles of association.
The portfolio combines international brands such as Actimel, Activia, Alpro, Aptamil, Danette, Danonino, evian, Volvic and Nutricia with local and regional brands. Danone describes itself as first worldwide in dairy and plant-based products, second in waters and early life nutrition, and fourth in adult medical nutrition. Specialized nutrition, which includes infant formula and medical nutrition, is typically more tightly regulated than everyday dairy or water and often reaches people through pharmacies, hospitals and healthcare professionals.
The company traces its origins to 1919, when its first yogurts were sold in Barcelona pharmacies to help children with digestive problems, before expanding to France and the United States. Danone has around 90,000 employees and a presence in over 120 markets, and it generated €27.283 billion in revenue in 2025. It is listed on Euronext Paris and available on the OTCQX platform through an ADR program.
Its Renew Danone strategy aims to strengthen competitiveness, accelerate the company's transformation and create sustainable value. Within that strategy, Danone has set a sustainability roadmap built on three pillars, Health, Nature, and People & Communities, and it has been B Corp certified globally since 2025.
