Overview
West Fraser is a diversified wood products company with facilities in Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and Europe, manufacturing, marketing, selling and distributing lumber, engineered wood products (OSB, LVL, MDF, plywood, particleboard), Northern bleached softwood kraft pulp, paper, wood chips and other residuals. The company operates more than 50 facilities, including 32 lumber mills, 15 OSB mills, nine engineered wood mills and two pulp and paper mills, and employs approximately 10,000 people. Its shares trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol WFG.
West Fraser traces its origins to 1955, when Two Mile Planing Mills Ltd. in Quesnel, British Columbia, was purchased, and it took the name West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. in 1958, after the timber supply west of the Fraser River. The company expanded across British Columbia through mill acquisitions and construction, and it moved into pulp through a joint venture to build a thermo-mechanical pulp mill in Quesnel. Its business strategy centers on low costs, a strong balance sheet and reinvesting profits, and it pursues reforestation along with certified, responsible sourcing and harvesting practices.
