Overview
Illuminate USA is an American advanced manufacturing company that produces solar panels at a facility in Pataskala, Ohio. The company focuses on clean energy manufacturing, solar panel technology and developing its workforce. The 1.1 million-square-foot site employs more than 1,400 associates across eight production lines, and at full capacity it is expected to produce more than 9.2 million panels a year, equal to five gigawatts of electricity production, which the company says is enough to power one million American homes. Domestic module assembly at this scale matters in the U.S. market, where much solar panel supply has historically been imported.
The facility makes bifacial solar panels, which can capture light on both the front and rear faces, and the company describes them as suited to large utility projects. Its output is aimed at two domestic markets: rooftop or residential installations, and utility-scale solar. The panels pair photovoltaic cells with heat-strengthened glass and an anodized aluminum alloy frame, are tested for conditions including hail, and up to 95% of their materials can be recycled at end of life. Its certifications include IEC 61215, IEC 61730, UL 61730 and IEC 62941, along with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management system standards. Developers and utilities commonly expect such module safety and performance certifications when selecting panels.
Illuminate USA is committed to onshoring the solar supply chain, which includes powering production with American-made materials. It invests in upskilling the Ohio workforce, hiring engineers, technicians and production associates and training them for jobs that the company says did not previously exist in the country. The company also stresses an inclusive workplace culture. Workforce development is a central challenge for new U.S. solar factories, whose specialized assembly roles have little domestic precedent.
