Overview
Suterra is a crop protection and commercial pest control company that develops mating disruption products based on naturally occurring compounds such as pheromones. Mating disruption releases a target pest's own sex pheromones into the air so that males cannot locate females, which reduces offspring and therefore crop damage. The company says its pheromone products are non-toxic to humans and animals, leave no harmful residues and do not contaminate groundwater or disrupt beneficial insect populations. Because pheromones affect only the target pest, mating disruption suits integrated pest management programs that aim to cut broad-spectrum insecticide use.
Suterra delivers pheromones through three main technologies: Puffer aerosol units, CheckMate sprayable formulations that can be tank-mixed with many fertilizers and insecticides, and Celada, whose resin controls the release rate. Puffer is used against pests such as navel orangeworm, codling moth and oriental fruit moth, while BioMagnet attract-and-kill devices, including BioMagnet Ruby for spotted wing drosophila, lure flies onto an insecticide coating. A range of formats lets growers match treatments to their crops, equipment and spray schedules. The company also sells control and monitoring products for common pests in commercial and residential markets.
Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Bend, Oregon, Suterra is part of The Wonderful Company, an international agribusiness and consumer products group. The parent company has invested more than $100 million in a facility in Bend where Suterra synthesizes active ingredients and manufactures its proprietary dispensers. Pheromone synthesis is specialized chemistry, and its cost has historically confined mating disruption largely to higher-value crops. Suterra's products are used on more than one million acres of tree fruit, nut, citrus, vine and vegetable crops in 30 countries. Beyond Oregon, the company has a European headquarters in Valencia, Spain, and offices in California, Italy and Chile.
