Overview
Mid Atlantic Retina, also known as Wills Eye Physicians-Mid Atlantic Retina, is a subspecialty ophthalmology practice focused on the diagnosis and treatment of vitreoretinal diseases, with close ties to Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Its physicians serve as the principal faculty of the Retina Service at Wills Eye Hospital, and each doctor is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Its specialists belong to organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, the Retina Society and the Macula Society, and between them have over 400 years of combined expertise. Retina specialists are ophthalmologists with additional fellowship training in diseases of the back of the eye, a field that combines in-office injections and laser treatment with complex surgery.
The practice treats the full range of adult and pediatric retinal conditions, including retinal detachment, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, and runs dedicated centers of excellence for age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Most patients arrive by referral from other eye care providers and physicians, as is typical in retina care, where optometrists and general ophthalmologists send cases needing specialized imaging or intervention. Research is a core activity: the company has 4 research centers and runs its own clinical trials, and its physicians have authored medical textbooks and over 1,000 peer-reviewed articles. For more than 50 years, members of the practice have held leadership roles at Wills Eye Hospital and trained residents and fellows, linking clinical work with teaching.
Mid Atlantic Retina has 30 physicians across 22 locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, including Philadelphia, Bala Cynwyd, Bethlehem, King of Prussia, Cherry Hill, Marlton, Mays Landing, Newark and Wilmington. This multi-site model lets patients needing frequent follow-up, such as regular injections for macular degeneration, receive care closer to home across the tri-state region.
